Illustrate My Graphic Novel, *Amore Infernale*

  • Status: Closed
  • Prize: $400
  • Entries Received: 56

Contest Brief

I'm Bryan Caplan, Professor of Economics at George Mason University and New York Times Bestselling author of the non-fiction graphic novel *Open Borders: The Science and Ethics of Immigration* (First Second, 2019). See here for details: http://smbc-comics.com/openborders.

My next goal is to break into fiction. I've written a fully storyboarded graphic novel, *Amore Infernale*, that I want illustrated. The complete pdf is here: http://www.bcaplan.com/ai.pdf. (Alternate link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/51u49dfcf2qyc2r/ai.pdf?dl=0)

My business plan is to put the project on Kickstarter once I've settled on an artist.

The contest: I'd like you to illustrate five pages (pages 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8) of the pdf and see if we're a good match.

I'm flexible on the comic style. Anything exciting could work, though I tend to prefer a traditional superheroic look. And I'd really like the backgrounds to be based on the real locations in Verona, Italy shown in the storyboards.

After the contest is over, I plan to talk to ALL of the top contestants about illustrating the full 160-page book.

Thanks for your interest! For more info about me, see www.bcaplan.com.

To everyone else who entered the contest:
We all probably did our best here and spent decent amount of time and effort but do remember that there’s a rain and sunshine for each of us as well. I have entered a lot of contest and honestly this is my first win that’s why I’m so happy about it. This is my sunshine after a couple of storms.
Remember, persistence and passion is the key! I wish you guys the best wishes for all your future and current projects and contracts.

I've awarded the prize to #87 , Aljon Dave D. I've honestly been amazed by the strength of the competition. All of the 5-star entries show amazing talent, and I'm potentially interested in working with all of you at some point. But Aljon's creativity won me over, especially the amazing character design and the expressiveness of the characters. And his work on page 6 and especially page 8 deeply impressed me.

Thanks again to everyone. It would my pleasure to take any of the contestants out to lunch if you're ever in DC.

This contest was an Amazing one! the contest holder was very responsive and was patiently guiding us and giving us tips and tweaks. Thank you again for this contest! It was pretty tough getting my entries from 3-stars up to finally being one of the 5-starred entries and finally winning but it was fun and as I have said before, I truly did learn a lot.

    Dear contestants,

The contest ends in five days. Thank you for all the amazing work! I can easily see working with several of the top entrants. But since there can only be one winner, let me tell you how things stand now.

    1. Entry #59 is the one to beat. I gave it five stars because I really like the style and the entrant submitted all five pages (though those pages aren't quite finished).

    2. The following are all within striking range of winning: #65, #62 , #57 , and #56 . If you are eager to win, please (a) draw all five pages, and (b) make requested revisions.

    3. Remaining entries are probably out of the running unless they make big changes and/or draw a lot more pages.

P.S. I know most of you live far away from me, but if any of you entrants are ever in Fairfax, I would be happy to treat you to lunch. Thanks for helping me realize my dream...

Hi there. Creating graphic novels and comic books are a big commitment. I'd strongly recommend building a team instead hiring just one person. It might be more costly but you'll definitely get better results in a shorter amount of time. I recommend hiring a penciler, inker and colorist. If you're open to this idea, let me know and I'll do some quality pencil pages for you. P.S I've already spotted a potential inker and colorist in this competition.

A standard US comic book page size is 6.875 by 10.438 inches bleed, 6.625 by 10.187 inches trim, with a live image area of around 6 by 9.5 inches. Do you want the same size.

I agree with Indrek! And for the others, claming that their work (ideas) would be "stollen"- the requirements for this contest are very specific. So I can't see how someone who is not an artist would be able to "steal" someone's work and even more - to improve it.

It's a double-edged sword - seal it and you'd probably get diverse entries and not just a clone of one decent idea over and over; however there's a good chance you'd also get inundated with stolen art from all over the internet with you none the wiser unless you do the tedious job of reverse image searching to ensure what you are getting are original art. Your choice of course but weigh it carefully.

Mr Bryan Caplan by sealing the contest you give a chance for talented contestants to seal their or otherwise ''hide'' theır entries especially in the case of multiple entries as they have to seal them and that comes with the cost of 0.50 usd for each entry. Hopefully I made it clear how necessary it is to seal the contest.

Thanks for your interest. I'm really open to any exciting visual style, though I tend to favor traditional superheroic looks. I would like the artist to use real reference photos from Verona, Italy to draw the backgrounds and locations.

      Hope that helps!
