Contest Brief

We are looking for a logo redesign. The logo is for a project that documents fungi and mushrooms. The goal of the project is to document all of the macrofungi that exist in North America. Our current logo was essentially a placeholder until the project was further along in development. We are at the point where we need a real logo for the project.

Issues we have with our current logo:
It is too busy. Too much going on in it.
It does not scale down well.
It does not look as good in black and white.
It does not have any direct connection with mushrooms or macrofungi.

What we like about the current logo:
It has a concept that expresses ecology - the interaction between organisms in the forest. Mushrooms form symbiosis with trees, are the primary decomposers in the forest, etc. Having some broader theme than just a pretty mushroom is essential. It has a focus on ecosystem health.

What our new logo should do:
-Provide a simple design with an icon and text. Each aspect (the logo and text) should be able to stand alone or work good together.
-The icon should look good large or small. In black and white or color.
-The icon/logo should have a broader concept than just a pretty mushroom.
-It should be limited to 2 or 3 colors, but also look good in black and white.
-Logo must be modern and clean.
-Text should read "The North American Mycoflora Project" or "North American Mycoflora Project."
-The logo should look good on a webpage (mycoflora.org), but also on Tshirts, promotional/advertising materials, etc.

***A logo with a pretty mushroom will not win this contest, unless it has a broader concept within such as ecosystem health, the health of forests, fungal ecology, fungal genetics, etc.***

Please submit draft / thoughts / variations so we can give quick feedback, you don't need to submit something that doesn't look finished yet.

Final submission should include JPEG and vector graphics for the logo.
