Contest Brief

Heaton Associates is seeking wall art designs to help support the development of plans for public realm improvements in Edmonton, London. Edmonton is
a deprived district of Enfield Borough, situated to the West of the Borough’s flagship development, Meridian Water, providing 10,000 homes and thousands
of jobs. The approved phase of the first 725 homes, situated on the doorstep of Edmonton, is under construction.
The site is the corner of a private car park in Edmonton, London, where a pedestrian passage (at the end of Trafalgar Place) allows shoppers to reach the
shopping street called Fore Street. Fore Street is the high street for Edmonton, so the passage is well used. The entrance from the car park is flanked by
blank brick walls and fails to draw shoppers. It needs enriching and humanising with colour and images or patterns that perhaps mean something to local
people. The local community is of extremely mixed backgrounds, see demographics on Google.
The winning submission will show how the blank entrance to the passage can be transformed into a colourful, enticing, intimate gateway at very low cost,
using paint as the main material. Other materials such as steel or wood can be used to support the design, if absolutely necessary. They would need to be
durable enough for a poorly overlooked corner of a car park, and must not allow people to climb the property walls.

Submission
A drawing or drawings in PDF or JPEG, sufficient to show the proposal. Any medium can be used to produce the drawing/s.

Winner
The winning entry will be awarded the prize money in return for the JPEG or PDF image file/s at 300dpi, in accordance with the usual conditions of the
Freelancer site. If entries are really good, we might award second and third prizes. The winning entry/ies will be submitted to the Councl for approval and
the winner/s will be invited to help deliver their work on site in roughly one year’s time, for which a fee will be paid.

Questions
See Q and A section at end. Questions can be submitted via this site.

TO ALL ENTRANTS thank you for the fantastic entries, and for your work. It was a close competition with the winner being chosen for responding best to the Brief. The winning entry showed the best response to the site, a long narrow and dull passageway, and to the mixed culture of the area. But all the entries are great in different ways, so we are encouraged to run more competitions as this project progresses over the next 12 months.
    Happy designs, happy days...thank you.

For those with fewer stars DON'T BE DISCOURAGED. The quality of your art is supreme, but we hope final entries will respond to the site, and maybe use photo/s of the site as a base? To assist, site photos have been uploaded and the deadline has been extended by a week. Here are some more answers to questions:
    - one artist for whole space to deliver project. This project is the first and is subject to approval by the planning authority. The first project will be complete in May and we expect there will be up to 10 more projects like this over the next year.
    - walls will be prepared to receive murals e.g. sheet ply cladding or CNC-cut Trespa panels on steel frame. The projecting panels will allow your work to extend beyond the walls in the picture, if a dynamic, 3D effect is desired.
    - we would ask the artist on site to 'fix' the painting once complete, with a clear resin varnish or similar. There would be paid visits for re-painting and touching up.

Thank you, that's exactly what I am trying to do with google maps photos. My entries are very raw ides and simple samples of different designs. All depends of how you imagine whole project. Many artists and all walls different designs?/ one artist all walls different designs?/ or maybe one artist for whole space? I am happy to design one huge design which will combine multiple elements, but there is my next question: Are you planning to renovate walls before painting murals? Brick walls are very difficult to paint design on them so design have to be simplified and I am bit worry about mold etc I am concern about if the paint will stay on the wall. I am brush painter not graffiti style however some spray techniques might be used but not entire artwork.

Please leave me some feedback under my entries about what you like and don't like about them-both about the shape and colours. Do you prefer pastel or bright colours or mix. I am open for suggestions. Two more things 1) finished painting always look better than scratch and 2) design can be painted higher if you will be able to provide/hire ladder scaffolding. Kindest Regards Beata. Ps hope this time my message remain whole as Iam trying to deliver that from one hour after you replied to my previous message.

We don't have any fixed dimensions yet. You can estimate from Google maps or the photo. This is an ideas competition, working drawings not required.
Happy to give feedback on early ideas before you develop them.
