Throughout the 18th century to modern times, the dichotomy of the culture of thinking and the culture of feeling influenced the arts. The culture of thinking predominates when civilization seeks material prosperity. During these times society rebukes traditional authority that may hamper scientific/material progress and supports rational thought and evidence based decision making. On the other hand, the culture of feeling attempts to go back to traditional ways. During these times artists value spirituality, meaning, and sentiment. The quality, style, and technique change after each paradigm shift reflecting the cultural values of the period.
The Age of Enlightenment is when civilization reached its scientific heights with its discoveries. Art during this time had a dull quality. The Romantic movement was a reaction to the debased forms of art of the Enlightenment. Art during these times took a more spiritual characteristic. Artists would emphasize the beauty and reverence for nature. Once again the culture of thinking took its hold during the Naturalism/Realism period. Scientific ideas of Charles Darwin had profound implications on civilization from economic, political, and cultural levels due to colonialism. Art during these times once again lost its subjective quality. Artists depict reality as it is or as it is observed plainly without showing how one may feel about the subject.
