I'm looking to build a standards compliant Domain Name Server (DNS) which is compatible with modern networking equipment, laptops and computers. Our DNS server should be the first hop from the network and actual DNS resolution to be handled by upstream or specified public DNS such as Google (8.8.8.8). The final project should handle DNS Resolution, Forwarding, TTL, Caching, Nameservers or any other functions to meet standard complaints.
Standard DNS record types should be supported:
A, AAAA, AFSDB, ATMA, CAA, CERT, CNAME, DHCID, DNAME, DNSKEY, DS, HINFO, ISDN, LOC, MB, MG, MINFO, MR, MX, NAPTR, NS, NSAP, NSEC, NSEC3, NSEC3PARAM, PTR, RP, RRSIG, RT, SOA, SRV, TLSA, TXT, and X25
The project is not expected to be used with enterprise networks and any user should be able to use the DNS server from any modern home networking equipment, computers and mobile devices.
The purpose of running our own DNS is to block access to undesired sites before forwarding them onto public DNS resolvers. The blocking feature is not in scope of this project and our expectation is the final delivered code will return 0.0.0.0 based on hardcoded values. The scope of handle DNS blocking is part of a separate project.
My preference is to develop the service using C# if possible.
Full decompiled source codes is required upon final devliery.

I can implement the majority of the DNS specification, however DNSSEC will be a bit tricky. The main goal will be to implement all of the major components required to have a fully functional DNS Server in C# that can respond to requests and act as SOA. Once that is complete, we can tackle the DNSSEC specification which may require an additional budget depending on how complex it is to integrate at that point. DNSSEC is not part of the core specification, and is not required to have a functional DNS server, however for a more "complete" solution, that would be the icing on the cake.
