All told, I have over 15 years of software development experience. Twelve of these years were spent running my own software development company. My partner and I grew our company from just the two of us to over $2MM in annual revenue and 89 employees. My responsibilities included project management, customer support, business analysis, business development and operations. My partner oversaw the development team.
In our early years, I wrote code but as the business grew, my responsibilities shifted to project management, business analysis and customer support. While I initially performed these tasks, I eventually had to put a team place in order to scale our team with our burgeoning workloads.
As a project manager, I had to have a firm technical understanding of the software we developed. As a result, I have a very good understanding of such concepts as technical architecture, databases, integration, security, scalabiility and so on. As my skills improved, so did my responsibilities to where I was writing requirements and designing the software.
