Consequent to several bus fires in the past years in Hong Kong and Shanghai and the recent London terrorist attack on buses, local citizens are now very concerned about the fire safety provisions on buses. A bus fire is similar to a building fire in which it also happens in three stages of growth, development and decay. There were 16 accidental bus fires (6 due to short circuit and 10 due to engine oil leakage) in 1995, 12 (3 due to short circuit and 9 due to engine oil leakage) in 1996, and 23 (6 due to short circuit and 17 due to engine oil leakage) in 1997 as reported (Oriental Daily, 1998). All of these incidents raised the concern of fire safety of double-deck bus. In this assignment, you have to apply the two layer zone model CFAST to study the smoke filling process in a double deck bus under 2 ventilation conditions: door opened and door closed. The selection of fire scenario and building materials of the double-deck bus should be based on your own judgment according to real situation. You have to state clearly the choice of the fire scenario and the fire characteristics selected.
