It is required to design bolted pressure vessels for Offshore and Onshore applications as shown in Figure 1. Two circular plates used in the given vessel are clamped together by means of bolts, which is shown in Figure below. The bolt is subjected to a variable force Fe varying from 0 to 30 kN. The bolt is made of SAE 4150 Annealed steel (E = 207 GPa). The bolt is machined and the expected reliability is 90%. The fatigue stress concentration factor is 2.0. The initial preload in the bolt is 6.5 kN. Design the bolt with 2.5 as the factor of safety using Goodman Criterion. Take the stiffness of the clamped members as 1.07 times that of the bolt. Include proper drawing to the scale of your bolt. The written report in acceptable format including introduction and conclusions will reflect your understating of Design of Machine Elements. Oral presentation of your work will reinforce the evaluation method of the written work.
