Redesign of a Kindergarten logo

A local kindergarten wishes to refresh their existing logo. They would like to retain their sense of playfulness and fun whilst updating their look to something more contemporary. I am looking for a scale-able, vector format design that is easily adaptable for both small and large formats.
At the moment it has a childlike hand-drawn feel to it which is liked but on the downside the singular typeface and monochrome style give it a dated, busy and overly casual appearance. In this project I would like to identify and review the appealing characteristics of the current logo and then recapture those elements with a new design. I am open to colour suggestions although I have a feeling it will need to be something more complex than "rainbow".
I'm a fan of simple, clean logos that are clever and/or make use of positive and negative space. One thing that is absent in the current logo is a contrast/juxtaposition between playful and serious. I'm thinking the playful pictorial elements could be balanced by some more formal aspects (perhaps the name JJ McMahon's or even the tagline?). This isn't a firm direction, just an observation that the current logo looks overly casual.

The branding and style on the web site will be refreshed at a later date and I would say don't incorporate any of this for your direction on the logo. Once the new logo is settled the web site will be brought into line with any new branding developed through this project.
