Google Adwords Conversion Code Installation

I need to have the Google Ad Words Conversion Code installed on our website. It has already been installed but does not seem to be working as we can not track sales that have come through a Google Advert. We believe the installation has to take into account our payment gateways and if a customer pays and exits at the gateway and does not return to our site to activate the code.
