Facebook Marketing API Ad Spend data

I have been trying to get facebook marketing api to provide me with the ad spend data i need for a custom php program. Despite using composer and supplied generated code from the facebook quick start setup it all fails to work. What i need is someone with experience in Facebook API to advise and provide a solution so that i can as easily as possible get ad spend data into my own php program only requiring minimal setup, ideally an auto token system so i can run a cron job to collect latest data daily. It is only the functionality to get the data from facebook that i require everything else i have setup.
