LONG TERM REQUIREMENT: I am envisioning a product that'd manage inventory of small business. The end user would be small business owner/retailer who is currently using manual ledgers to get his work done. ESSENTIALS: 1. Need to provide form based interface for data input. 2. Reporting mechanism for e.g. number of products sold between a date range, no. of stocks left for a particular product etc 3. The tool should be scalable run time for e.g. shopkeeper can add new products/update prices etc 4. The tool should be desktop based and simplistic. We really dont want too much technicality so that it goes beyond understanding of basic computer literacy. For e.g. we don't want to build a tool on LAMP platform and push end user to new IT management tasks like hosting, server management etc At this stage I am only looking for a PoC. (proof of concept/demo) However, how this product would be technically implemented is yet to be decided. FEW IDEAS Option 1 - Choose excel as a backend and design custom forms Option 2 - Choose Access as backend and use infopath forms HERE IS WHAT I EXPECT IN RESPONSE a. tell me your understanding of this tool. b. tell me tools/technologies you'd use to create this b. share any examples of something similar you've done before WHAT I'd DO i. if your idea appeals to me, I would award this small project to you to get a poc done. ii. poc would essentially include designing a form (based on technology you suggest) and making it to talk to backend (based on your suggestion) NEXT STEPS i. if the POC works out well, I'd create a bigger project (around $1000) to get a complete product created. Hi, My name is Florin, I'm from Romania and I am a database applications developer (with a degree in database administration). Based on the project description, I would propose the following solution. We can build a simple and user friendly application that will consist of two files: - a database file to store the records (Access) - an interface file that will be linked to the database and will handle all queries. Several advantages of this solution type are: - the application does not require installation, it can be copied on the target machine and run. - the user does not work directly in the database tables, hence the data is safe to accidental edits. - the interface can be customized in any way: font type, color and size, field arrangement etc. In its minimum version the application should include: - product management - stock management - reports. Based on purchase orders, products are added in stock at a specific time and date, with a purchase price. Based on sales orders, products leave stock at a specific time, date and price. Using purchase and sales, we can produce a wide array of reports: current inventory, products purchased/sold in date range, best selling products etc. We can add user management, with user roles, for larger businesses for example. I have create desktop tools for multiple companies for the last 20 years. From your description I would use MS Access, however we would need to know how many users to avoid any limitations, and also would this be used over a network. We can also use infopath forms if entry will be web based. The database would have easy to use button driven forms with reports based upon the requirements specified at the time. I have written, inventory management systems, Patient data systems, garden centre stock managements systems as examples over the last twenty years so I believe I will have the experience you need when it comes to the full project. I will be more than happy to complete a poc for this project. I have some additional questions for the overall project. Is this going to be part of a POS system? That is just one. I would build this with a access back end - that will give it scalability. The front end can be either web based or we could build a VB screen to handle the functions. I would envision it needing a product entry form, a search product function to locate specific inventory items, update item detail capability. Update inventory levels - various ways to enter, possible product delivery entry - product sale entry. I excel at building interfaces for the known tech minded end users. Hope you will consider me.
