Need some help in building splunk dashboard

two steps: 1. get data from stdout to splunk (index) 2. build dashboards on the indexed data. questions: 1. what is the deployment arch of splunk instances, cluster or single instance. 2. The data format can impact how to build the dashboard. need understand the dashboards and data schema/format.
