Wireless Optimization

Your group has been tasked with coming up with a baseline configuration for all 802.11n access points for a new deployment. Obtain a classroom AP and work with your group to create such a configuration.

You have two main goals – Optimize both Security and Performance. Using the guidelines below, configure your access point with the appropriate settings. You will also be required to list the appropriate settings and explain why you chose to configure (or NOT configure) those settings. It’s always a good idea to refer to the inline help, or the manufacturer support page to research or confirm settings.

Security

Information

1. The organization already has a server that provides AAA (authentication, authorization, accounting) services for VPN clients at IP address: [url removed, login to view]

a. Key is ‘v3r1ficAtion’ (no quotes)

2. Your guest VLAN ID is 667, your internal network VLAN is 555

3. Internal devices will be roaming quite often, so this should impact your decisions

4. You already have a AUP link at [url removed, login to view] that has been approved by internal lawyers

Guidelines

1. NO default SSID names or VLAN IDs can be used.

2. Required SSIDs and settings

a. GUEST

i. SSID broadcast

ii. No authentication required

iii. Guests should not be allowed to contact other wireless guests

b. INTERNAL

i. SSID should not be seen by casual observers

ii. Highest levels of authentication and encryption possible (with no possibility of using older standards)

3. Only your workstation and the IT staff with IP Address of [url removed, login to view] – [url removed, login to view] should be able to manage the APs remotely. (don’t lock yourself out!)

4. Secure protocols should be used for management with no provisions for insecure protocols.

Performance

Information

1. All clients will be 802.11n

2. A site survey has shown the 2.4ghz frequency to be overused and not viable in this location

3. These APs will be used in a high density WLAN and support clients with very low transmit power

4. According to survey results, clients are expected to be streaming video for instructional purposes

5. The manufacturer has informed you that settings pertaining to multicast, rate sets, or rate limiting may have unpredictable results and should not be used at this time.

Guidelines

1. Performance is more important than backwards compatibility

2. APs should be able to intelligently adjust to channel usage or interference

3. ANY method that can be used to increase throughput (even if it’s only 10%) should be utilized

4. Power management for wireless devices is of the utmost importance. Any settings that can impact this should be set to the highest (most helpful) value.

5. Interference with legacy clients or networks is NOT a concern.

6. Clients supported per AP should be decided by calculating the ratio of their median bandwidth needs as compared to the maximum Data Rate supported by 802.11n MCS Index 15.

I NEED TO COMPLETE THE BELOW STEPS BASED ON THE ABOVE INFOS:

Provide screenshots for any settings you set or modified pertaining to the security information or guidelines.

For each screenshot, specify which guideline or information item impacted the settings and explain why each specified setting or value was set or modified. Each team member is expected to contribute to the answers and explanations.
