TOPIC: ROMAN ARCHITECTURE ACROSS TIME Demonstrate perceptive understanding of the lasting influences of the classical world on other cultures across time. You have been given information on at least three Roman temples and two examples of Roman civic architecture. Eg The temple of Bacchus at Baalbek, The Maison Caree, The Pantheon, the Colosseum, The Theatre at Lepcis Magna. You will present your illustrated analysis as a WRITTEN REPORT WITH ILLUSTRATION. You will write and submit a BIBLIOGRAPHY. TASK: Preparatory Activity After making sure that you are familiar with several works of Roman religious and civic architecture, use these works as primary source evidence to: - analyze aspects of Roman architecture, which were reproduced/adapted across the two time periods. - examine three works/buildings from each of two post-classical periods for evidence of similarities and differences in subject matter, architecture forms, contexts, or creation. - explore the ideas and values of the two periods when the artworks were created. - develop hypothesis about the reasons for the lasting influences of Roman architectural forms across time. PRODUCE YOUR PRESENTATION OF YOUR ANALYSIS - Examine at least THREE of the illustrations of the Roman architecture provided from the ancient world. You may write labelled notes around the illustrations to assist communication of your understanding. - Analyze how the architect has incorporated aspects of Roman architecture into the THREE chosen works. - Explore the context of these works, considering aspects such as where the architecture was found, why the forms and techniques might have been chosen, and the cultural expectations ( ideas and values) of the time when these works were commissioned. - Examine THREE architectural works from the time of the renaissance and THREE works the 20th century, all of which depict some or all of the forms or techniques identified in the ancient architecture, noting similarities to and differences from the originals in form, function, technique, subject matter or rendition. You may write labelled notes around illustrations of the works/buildings to assist in communication of your understanding. - Analyze how the architect has incorporated into each work aspects of the Roman architecture in ways that suggest ancient Roman influence. - Explore the context of these works/buildings, considering aspects such as: why the architectural forms may have been chosen; and the cultural expectations (ideas and values) of the two periods when each group of buildings were commissioned. Analyze showing insight, the reasons for the lasting influences of Roman architectural for building across time, supporting your ideas with appropriate specific evidence from primary sources material, that is, what is demonstrated in the architectural works/buildings you have examined. Features of insight could include: • explaining reasons for the choice of Roman architectural forms across time • according for similarities, differences, and adaptations in the use of Roman architectural forms and or techniques in the studied works of the two later time periods • clearly identifying forms and patterns occurring across time • explaining the relevance of the ideas and values, cultural expectations, and codes of behavior of the three time periods • showing discernment regarding limitations of sources of evidence.
