You are expected to consider the hypothetical production scenario given to your
team, identify and define a quality or reliability problem, perform an analysis using the
appropriate methods and techniques covered in the course, and propose a solution for process
improvement and further monitoring. Your analysis needs to be specific, complete, and
justifiable.
Contents of the project
Your ultimate purpose is to study the production (manufacturing or service) scenario
with the appropriate tools of quality and/or reliability engineering to contribute to its design
and/or continuous performance improvement.
You will need to use your intuition on the factors that cause poor quality and what
kind of solutions can be considered. Make sure to justify your discussion and
recommendations with data and proper quantitative analysis rather than subjective statements
of individuals and/or benchmark trends.
The Report
You will eventually submit a report that will be the only document to be assessed.
Suggested parts of the report are as follows:
COVER PAGE: Project title, your team identification and the date
INTRODUCTION: A summary of the report, which briefly states the contents of the project
and the merits of the specific quality/reliability analysis (about one page)
MAIN TEXT: Details of the study consisting of the following:
Problem Definition: This section will describe the system, process and/or product
under consideration, discuss appropriate quality characteristics, internal and external
customers, symptoms, possible causes, objectives in carrying out the project, etc. as
well as a detailed description of the existing situation (with relevant charts and
diagrams).
Data Analysis: An elaborate analysis using the appropriate methods and techniques
covered in the course. In the case of statistical process control, for example,
generating appropriate variable and/or attribute control charts, pattern analysis,
identification and removal of special causes, and a process capability analysis (if
appropriate) are natural elements to be included in this section. If the problem that
you prefer to focus on is related to reliability or design for quality, you should revise
the contents of your analysis section accordingly. This part should end with a
discussion of how to improve the process or system.
Alternatives Proposed: This section will give a detailed description of the alternative
solutions to your problem. Each alternative needs to be better than the others in at
least one area. For instance, an alternative may be faster and cheaper to install, but
have less potential contribution in improving the performance than another
alternative that requires a large investment in the medium term. State your judgment
on the relative superiority of each alternative.
Evaluation of Alternatives: Compare and contrast the various alternatives your team
has developed in terms of potential for quality improvement, productivity gains,
improved worker morale, cost, technology etc. Describe the best one you chose with
fine detail.

CONCLUSION: Here, the overall work done should be briefly discussed and the results
obtained have to be presented (limited to one page). Reading only the introduction and the
conclusion should give a fair enough idea on your project.
APPENDIX: All charts, drawings, photographs, data sheets, and detailed calculations can go
into the appendix. Every item in the appendix should be referenced and a brief walkthrough
discussion should be done in the main text.
Format and Language
Please use, a 12-point font and a 1.5-space paragraph format. The sections should be
properly titled; the appendix should be split into sections and the supplementary material
should be presented in the order in which it is referenced from the main text. Please use a
formal language free of any spelling and grammar mistakes.
